How to make perfect cold coffee drinks at home without breaking the bank
COSTA Coffee loyalty club members will need to buy two extra drinks to qualify for a freebie from August.
If the downgrade to perks leaves you feeling a bit short-changed, it is time to start creating your own caffeine fix.
Here's how to make perfect cold coffee drinks at home.
CHEAT FRAPPE: When your coffee has gone cold, pour it into ice cube trays and put it in the freezer.
When you have enough frozen coffee cubes for a cuppa, drop them into a mixer and blitz until slushy.
This is a better method than blending coffee with ice, as you do not dilute the coffee. Then pour into a glass and finish with whipped cream and syrup to go the whole hog.
ICE ICE BABY: You can buy gadgets to create iced coffee at home.
Try Bodum's cold brew coffee maker, down from £52 to £16.95 at Bodum.com.
The coffee percolates from cold water over 12 to 24 hours in the fridge.
The longer you leave it, the stronger the taste. Cold brew has a less bitter taste than coffee made from hot water. Pour over ice when ready.
But you don't need specialist devices. Brew your coffee as normal and pour straight over a glass of ice. Or leave the coffee to cool first, to stop the ice melting quite as fast and diluting the drink.
SWEET TOOTH: It is better to use syrup in cold drinks to sweeten, as sugar will not dissolve properly. Plus, you can get a range of flavours to replicate your coffee shop favourite.
Morrisons sells Tate & Lyle Barista syrups for £2.79, in vanilla, caramel and hazelnut favours. But making your own vanilla syrup is easy.
Mix equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over a low heat and add vanilla extract to flavour, or leave a vanilla pod to steep instead.
SERVE IT: Pour your drink into a special glass for the authentic coffee shop touch. Hobbycraft sells drinking jars with a straw through the top, £1.50 each or two for £2.
BAG a chicken royale (or vegan alternative) for just £1 at Burger King - tomorrow only. It usual costs £5.99, and get the offer by ordering on the chain's free app.
